I am going to be writing about the Curiosity Rover that has just recently landed on Mars. They hope to find signs that possibly at one point Mars could have supported life. It does this this through a series of tools including, a laser to blast open rocks and study the insides, a device that fires neutrons at the surface to detect hydrogen, and an instrument to analyze soil.
It only missed its exact landing point by 1.5 miles, which is amazing for it to have traveled that far. It used a parachute 52 feet in diameter to descend to Mars. It also used a system called a skycrane to lower itself to the surface using four engines to slow its descent to a halt right when it hit the surface. I think this is a huge accomplishment for the engineers and scientists that worked on this rover.
