Republican convention By: Josh Benner

The 2012 National Republican Convention was very interesting to me.  It focused on nominating Mitt Romney as its presidential candidate and Paul Ryan as its vice-presidential choice.  This year’s election is said to be the most important in history.  Our country is spending more than we take in, and many think we are heading for bankruptcy unless something is done.

Mitt Romney has been successful businessman, governor of Massachusetts, and Chairman for the Olympics.  The democrats see him as a wealthy man who will only look out for his wealthy friends.  They say he has no interest in the poor, the old, or those with special health needs.  Romney states that he does care about these people, that he will provide needed help for them, but believes they can not depend on the government for all their needs.  He believes if he can get the economy moving again, many can help themselves by getting jobs.

Paul Ryan is a congressman from Wiscosin.  He came up with a very controversial plan that is to balance the U.S budget in twenty-five years.  While some have argued this is too tough and will hurt those who need help the most, a few have said the budget needs to be balanced before then.  Romney and Ryan are both fans of this plan and many voters seem to believe in this plan too.

The biggest issues in this year’s campaign will be national healthcare and the economy.  Romney and Ryan do not believe in national healthcare.  They also believe in creating more jobs through cutting taxes and letting businesses do their thing without the federal government butting in.

Some say Romney is too impersonal and not a fan of women.  During the convention, his wife, Ann, spoke.  She talked about her husband and made him seem more “average,” explaining how he worked hard for all they enjoy.  Many women spoke to prove he believes in women.

As I said earlier, many say this is the most important election ever held.  I like politics.  I hope to hear about the candidates and their ideas and not hear them cut down one another.  People need to think about the future and not just today or tomorrow.  Many need to remember that hard work makes you proud of yourself.  If they do this, I think the best decisions will be made and the best President chosen.
