Two young men make a bet with an older man that their girlfriends will stay faithful to them no matter what happens. They disguise themselves as rich merchants and try to make each others girlfriend fall in love with them. I thought this sounded like a fun movie plot, but then my Dad told me it was the story of an opera we were going to see. I don’t mind a little bit of classical music, but I’d rather listen to Taylor or Britney or Katy. Spending a whole Friday night at an opera didn’t sound that great to me, but this was my dad’s favorite so I went along. I found out I was completely wrong about opera from the time the orchestra started playing. The story was really funny, and the performers sang and acted perfect for their parts. They sang in English instead of Italian so we could understand the story and humor. Since I like to sing, I enjoyed hearing the voices of the female singers performing the really hard music. Also, the costumes were so beautiful!
The opera was called Cosi fan Tutti, which means “women are like that.” It was written in 1790 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. We don’t have opera performed very often in Huntsville, but the next time we do, give it a try. You might be surprised too!
